Garmin Edge 305 Cycling Computer Review

Garmin 305 Heart Rate Monitor

The Garmin Edge 305 Cycling Computer and heart rate monitor is coupled with Garmin''s GPS technology. An optional cadence sensor can add to the data you retrieve from the device.

The Garmin Edge 305 is a personal trainer and cycle computer. It gives valuable inputs about speed, distance, time, heart rate, calorie consumption, altitude, etc. In addition, it has a heart rate monitor which uses a chest strap to measure heart rate.

Like other Garmin cycle computers, this one is easy to install as well with no calibration required. Garmin Edge 305 has a customizable display which shows up to 8 data fields at any one time. It has a highly sensitive GPS receiver: will prove crucial if your course happens to run through a wooded area.

A feature about the Edge 305 that you are sure to like is the Training Center Software which allows you to design as well as download your courses, and carry out analysis retrospectively. In the long, you can keep track of your intensity and progress. Presence of Virtual Trainer will make your training interesting and help in making rapid progresses in your training intensity.

The Garmin Edge 305 cycling computer also has an auto-pause feature so that if you are training in urban areas and need to stop often, data collection will stop. You can also add an optional cadence/speed sensor to this unit for measuring the consistency of your effort. The rechargeable li-ion battery lasts about 12 hours.

Customer Review:

And here''s what some of the customers who bought the Garmin Edge 305 have to say about it:

  • ...the 305 is a neat item, and very clean to install. Satellite reception is excellent, even in dense forests.... one item that is missing, and I was surprised about is that the 305 does not have a persistent odometer...
  • ... I love the customization and the complete wirelessness of the computer. It basically makes all other bicycle computers obsolete by comparison. Installation is a breeze without any of the pain in the ass calibration required from virtually every other bike computer on the market. It just works right out of the box...
  • ... the ''Training Center'' software is excellent, with a full set of graphs and maps, much easier to navigate than e.g. Cyclosport or Cambietta software...

At $380, it might sound a bit more pricy as compared to say an Edge 205 but then it does offer a lot more in terms of features.

Get your skin wet

Some problems may be caused by dry skin or exercising in the winter. If it''s hot enough the monitor will begin sending your pulse to the heart monitor watch once you start to sweat. If you don''t sweat a lot, some advocate licking the strap before you start exercising, squirt some water between your skin and the strap or you can use a little heart monitor gel.
